A bruised and traumatized woman found lying on a La Jolla bicycle path Tuesday told authorities she was jumped while walking along the trail, then was beaten and sexually assaulted, police reported.
A caller reported finding the injured woman about 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Draper Avenue and Gravilla Street, in the area of Starkey Park, according to San Diego police.
The La Jolla resident told responding officers that she had been attacked by a man who appeared to be in his 40s and was "acting strangely,'' SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.
Medics took the woman to a hospital for treatment of various injuries, including facial trauma. Police, meanwhile, searched the area around the bike path and detained a man matching the general description of the assailant.
Though the victim later told investigators that 37-year-old Robert Hentschel was not the man who had attacked her, he was booked into the county jail on outstanding warrants, Munoz said.
