Controversial parking move is rescinded
May 21, 2008
By Maria Connor - La Jolla Light

A motion made by Promote La Jolla (PLJ) President Deborah Marengo at its May 14 meeting to rescind an earlier motion to submit the parking advisory committee's findings and framework to the San Diego City Council passed unanimously.

The original motion, passed at PLJ's April 9 meeting, met with widespread disapproval from the community because the findings that were to be sent to the City Council included provision for paid on-street parking.

The La Jolla Community Planning Association, at its May 1 meeting, and the La Jolla Town Council, at its May 8 meeting, voted to withdraw their representatives from the parking advisory committee.

City Council President Scott Peters had recommended looking at a new approach to addressing the parking issues in La Jolla.

Several audience members, many of whom sit on other community committees, thanked PLJ for its decision to rescind the earlier instruction to the parking board.

Others were more skeptical.

"Following the lead of the CPA and the Town council, I'm sad that (PLJ) didn't withdraw the three members they have on the parking board," said Darcy Ashley, a member of Nopaidparking.org. "It's my greatest hope that all the energy that's been put into parking will generate some positive change in possible improvement to the time zones. That would be the real tragedy in all of this; if they don't get meters, then they do nothing."

She added that, in her opinion, there was a strong consensus for 90-minute parking zones and/or implementation of a chalkless parking monitoring system.

"Frankly, this has been the most distasteful experience of my life, being involved in this parking thing," said George Hauer, owner of George's at the Cove and a PLJ board member. "I think we have to put this whole thing behind us."
